Medicaid Cap Repeal Gets Notice

Statement

Date: May 11, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

Organizations outside Congress are taking notice of my renewed effort to repeal the cap on federal Medicaid in the insular areas. GovTrack Insider, recently spotlighted my bill, H.R.6495, and explained what is at stake to readers unfamiliar with the issue. Attention like this can increase the chance of moving legislation. Also, encouraging: Equally American, a non-profit that advocates for equality and civil rights for Americans living in the insular areas, formally endorsed my bill in a letter this week to Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Pallone and Ranking Member Walden. That endorsement was followed by support from the National Council of Asian Pacific Americans and the Association of Asian Pacific Community Health Organizations. We already lowered the local match for Medicaid in the Families First Coronavirus Response Act. The 11/89, local/federal match is now lower than the normal rate for any state, a longstanding goal for insular area Members of Congress. Repealing the cap on funding is the next step. Pacific Delegates have already requested congressional leadership include the repeal in CARES II.
