At Global Virtual Concert, Mucarsel-Powell And South Florida Student Mariachi Group Advocated For Farmworkers Deemed Essential During COVID-19 Pandemic

Date: May 5, 2020
Location: Miami, FL

On Tuesday, May 5, U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (FL-26) stood alongside the Homestead-Miami Mariachi Conservatory at Altísimo Live!, a livestreamed, international festival supporting farmworkers. After their performance, Mucarsel-Powell spoke on the international virtual stage to shout-out Florida farmers and their important work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

"This Cinco De Mayo, I proudly joined students and community leaders in celebrating the dedication of Florida's farmworkers, who are a critical part of one of the largest agricultural workforces in the country," said Mucarsel-Powell. "Florida's approximately 100,000 farmworkers have been deemed mission critical to harvesting the food that Americans all over the country eat. They represent the promise of this country and are putting their lives on the line for our community. I am fighting in Congress to prioritize farmworkers' health and safety throughout this unprecedented crisis."

Prior to the students' performance, Mucarsel-Powell held a press conference to cheer on the students and to celebrate the work of local farmworkers.A downloadable video of the press conference and the livestreamed performance, as well as photos from the event, can be found HERE.

Speakers included:

U.S. Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell (FL-26);
Cipriano "Cip" Garza, Co-founder of Homestead-Miami Mariachi Conservatory (HMMC);

Mucarsel-Powell has been consistently advocating for the wellbeing of Florida farmworkers:

April 15, 2020: During the COVID-19 crisis, Mucarsel-Powell joined the Congressional Hispanic Caucus (CHC) in calling on Congressional leadership to include immigration and workplace protections, financial assistance, and healthcare access for farmworkers in future legislation to slow the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. See letter here.

December 10, 2019: Mucarsel-Powell joined the CHC in endorsing H.R. 5038, the Farm Workforce Modernization Act. This bill would create meaningful reforms to support farmworkers and the agricultural industry alike by stabilizing the farm workforce and providing a pathway to legal status for workers and their families.
