U.S. House Assistant Speaker Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.) issued the following statement on the bicameral introduction of the Justice in Policing Act to address systemic racism and violence against Black Americans:

"Across New Mexico and the nation, Americans of all ages, races, and creeds are calling for justice for George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and the countless other victims of police brutality. With the leadership of the Congressional Black Caucus, I am heartened that Congress is stepping up to this task with the bicameral introduction of the Justice in Policing Act. This critical legislation increases accountability and transparency and bans dangerous tactics, including the chokeholds and no-knock warrants responsible for the deaths of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor. To all those who demand justice now, we hear you."
