McCollum Statement on Police Reform and Accountability
Congresswoman Betty McCollum (DFL-Minn.) issued the following statement today:
"Congressional Democrats are advancing an urgently needed reform bill addressing the systemic police abuses that have for years been perpetrated against communities of color. That includes banning the use of chokeholds, establishing a nationwide database to track police misconduct, and ending the transfer of weapons made for war to local law enforcement. We must demand accountability from local government and the police they hire. In my district, I support fully funding professional, respectful, and responsible law enforcement entities like the St. Paul Police Department, our East Metro suburban departments, and the Ramsey and Washington County Sheriff's Offices that are keeping my constituents safe. The Minneapolis City Council is free to defund or abolish its police department or ask to have federal COPS funding terminated. That will be their decision to make."
