Bill to Reduce Impact of Regulations on Small Businesses Passes the Senate

A bill authored by State Sen. Victoria Spartz (R-Noblesville), that would enhance legislative oversight of the executive bureaucracy and decrease regulatory impact on small businesses recently passed the Senate.

If passed and signed into law, Senate Bill 364 would require that when new legislation is introduced, the potential regulatory impact on small businesses has to be disclosed and also directs state agencies to report on the issued agency regulations back to the legislative branch.

According the recent study of 50 states published in the NSCL journal last summer, "the Indiana legislature lacks crucial institutional resources necessary for legislative oversight of the executive branch. Not only does the Indiana legislature lack some oversight prerogatives, it has been willing to eliminate some of the powers it had previously, such as eliminating the Administrative Rule Oversight Committee."

"As a former large business advisor and current small business-owner, I understand how detrimental government regulations can be to small businesses," Senator Spartz said. "Pro-small business climate is extremely important for innovation, entrepreneurship and survival of the free enterprise system."

SB 364 now moves to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
