Wenstrup Backs Police Reform Legislation

Press Release

Date: June 19, 2020
Location: Cincinnati, OH

Today, Congressman Brad Wenstrup (OH-02) released the following statement after joining as an original cosponsor of the Just and Unifying Solutions to Invigorate Communities Everywhere (JUSTICE) Act, introduced in the House by Rep. Pete Stauber (MN-08), a former police lieutenant, and in the Senate by Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina.

"I wouldn't be alive today if it weren't for the brave actions of officers Crystal Griner and David Bailey three years ago. I firmly believe the overwhelming majority of law enforcement officers are brave and honorable people. However, recent tragedies involving George Floyd and others have only highlighted the need for refined standards and the continued pursuit of equal justice in our country," said Congressman Wenstrup. "While much of this work needs to be done at the state and local levels, there are steps we can take at the federal level to provide our localities with resources and guidance helpful in preventing injustices. I'm proud to support this results-oriented legislation that will improve transparency, accountability, training, and performance for law enforcement."

Background:

The JUSTICE Act reforms build upon President Trump's recent Executive Order on Safe Policing for Safe Communities.
