Congressman Mo Brooks Votes Against Obamacare Expansion

Date: June 29, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

Monday, Congressman Mo Brooks (AL-05) voted "No" on H.R. 1425, a Socialist Democrat bill to expand the failed ObamaCare law. H.R. 1425 passed the U.S. House on a 234-179 vote.

Congressman Brooks said, "ObamaCare is one of the worst boondoggles and failures ever foisted on the American people. Rather than ditch a bad law, Socialist Democrats seek to expand it, thus guaranteeing longer waits for worse health care at higher costs. I have voted dozens of times to repeal ObamaCare in part or in whole. Today, I voted "No' on the Socialist Democrats' using COVID19 to further socialize and hurt American healthcare."

Brooks added, "America was founded on freedom and liberty. Our free-enterprise economic system has made America the most prosperous and powerful nation in world history. In 2009, prior to Obamacare, America had the world's best healthcare system at much lower cost. Despite this, Socialist Democrats, in their quest to socialize medicine and force government bureaucrats between patients and their doctors, doubled down by bringing H.R. 1425 to the floor. In sum, H.R. 1425 expands the worst of Obamacare while papering over Obamacare's worst flaws."

Brooks continued, "Socialist Democrats refuse to acknowledge ObamaCare's worst flaws. A 2017 U.S. Department of Health and Human Services report found that nationwide individual market premiums increased 105% -- meaning ObamaCare more than doubled health insurance premium costs.[1] In dollar amounts, nationwide annual health insurance premiums rose on average $2,928 per policy. ObamaCare hurt Alabama more than any other state in America. In Alabama, health insurance costs increased a staggering and obscene 223%.[2] That is not a "first' Alabama citizens want or can afford. Alabama's skyrocketing health insurance costs severely undermine the ability of Alabama citizens to access healthcare and take care of their own families."

Brooks concluded, "I'm thankful President Trump has stated he will veto H.R. 1425. H.R. 1425 deserves to die. H.R. 1425 spits on the Constitution and the free-enterprise system that has made America the most prosperous and powerful nation in world history. I support free-enterprise. I support liberty. I support freedom. I support health care decisions being made by patients and doctors, not unelected government bureaucrats in Washington, DC. I will fight tooth and nail every attempt to further socialize American health care. "
