Gohmert's Statement on Schools Safely Reopening

Date: July 9, 2020
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Gohmert (TX-01) released the following statement regarding the Trump Administration's push for schools to reopen safely this fall:

"The Trump Administration's dedication to safely reopen our schools this fall puts the interests and well being of American children first. The nation-wide shutdowns likely caused millions of students to fall behind in their studies and research has found that many students could lose "most or all' of what they learned during the 2019-2020 school year due to the disruption in their education. Furthermore, a recent American Enterprise Institute study found that only 1/5 of students received "rigorous" remote instruction during the lock-down this spring. American families deserve better than this. Even those at the American Academy of Pediatrics believe that "all policy considerations for the coming school year should start with a goal of having students physically present in school.'

"It is understandable that there may be exceptions in certain regions if there is an unmanageable surge in coronavirus cases or hospitalizations, however, it is clear the shutdown has negatively impacted our nation's children and their education. We owe it to the American people do everything we can to safely send our kids back to school where they can thrive alongside their friends and receive the benefits of in-person learning."
