Congresswoman Stacey E. Plaskett Announces Two Important Grants From FEMA for Governor Juan F. Luis Hospital and the Virgin Islands Department of Health

Congresswoman Stacey E. Plaskett released the following statement regarding two important grants totaling $10 million grant for Governor Juan F. Luis Hospital and the Virgin Islands Department of Health:

"Today, I am pleased to announce a grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The grant is for $1,562,923.99 in federal funding to Governor Juan F. Luis Hospital. This award provides federal funding for Emergency Protective Measures. Emergency Protective Measures are temporary measures taken against an incident. Emergency Protective Measures are actions taken before, during, and after an incident to save lives, protect public health and safety, and prevent damage to improved public and private property.

"I am also pleased to announce another grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The grant is for $8,994.564.00 in federal funding to the Virgin Islands Department of Health. Hurricane Maria caused extensive damage throughout the US Virgin Islands (USVI) including the Island of St. Croix. The Charles Harwood Medical Clinic (CHMC) is an 82,400SF Medical Clinic, which suffered catastrophic damages due to hurricane-force winds and water intrusion. The CHMC consist of several buildings such as the Clubhouse Building, the Motor Pool Building, Storage Outbuilding, Emergency Medical Service (EMS) Building, and Maintenance Building. The damages to all of the buildings consisted of but not limited to the roofs, ceilings, interior and exterior doors and windows, electrical systems, lighting, insulation, floors, ducts and heating /cooling /fire systems. Due to the amount of damages, a 50% calculation was performed and was determined to be 59.72% damaged and eligible for replacement. This grant is for A&E services to develop a Master Plan, the technical evaluation of damages, and design and restoration of the CHMC. This Project proposes funds in the amount of $9,993,960.00 based on the Preliminary Estimated Cost of Construction (Work to be Completed) of $23,020,059.00. No insurance proceeds are anticipated for this project. No mitigation considerations are associated with this project. The costs for this project are for A & E services at $9,993,960.00 with a Federal Cost Share of 90% = $8,994,564.00.

"These important grants will benefit the Virgin Islands tremendously with our ongoing rebuilding efforts and making the Virgin Islands whole again. The United States government and the international community has an obligation to work with the affected local governments to restore infrastructure, provide critical humanitarian assistance, and help rebuild our islands."
