Today, Congressman Filemon Vela (TX-34) and Congressman Paul Mitchell (MI-10) introduced the Coast Guard Combat-Injured Tax Fairness Act. The bipartisan legislation amends the Combat-Injured Veterans Tax Fairness Act of 2016 to allow members of the Coast Guard to file claims for credit or refund for taxes improperly withheld from disability severance pay.
"The U.S. Coast Guard operates continuously in both sea and air protecting our shores and waterways in a range of high-risk missions from Search and Rescue to Maritime Interdiction," said Congressman Filemon Vela. "Those who are injured protecting their fellow citizens deserve America's full support and care. The Coast Guard Combat-Injured Tax Fairness Act puts money back in the pockets of injured Coast Guardsmen who have been incorrectly taxed on pay they rightfully earned. I am proud to champion this bill and support these unsung heroes who put their health and well-being in jeopardy daily for the safety of Americans."
"The men and women of the U.S. Coast Guard are an integral part of our Armed Forces, performing diverse missions to protect our nation and coastal communities like those along Lake Huron in Michigan's 10th District," said Congressman Paul Mitchell. "Coast Guard veterans deserve the same benefits for their service as veterans of other service branches, which is why I'm proud to join Rep. Vela in introducing the Coast Guard Combat-Injured Tax Fairness Act. Congress must ensure these veterans are not unfairly taxed on benefits they earned through their service."
