Letter to Democratic Colleague - Dear Colleague on Labor Day

Letter

Dear Democratic Colleague,

On September 5, 1882, ten thousand American workers marched through the streets of New York City for the first Labor Day Parade. Twelve years later, in 1894, Congress passed legislation to establish a national holiday honoring the contributions of America's working men and women to the strength of our nation.

On Labor Day, our nation pays tribute to the working Americans who are the backbone of our economy and the foundation of our strength -- remembering that the middle class has a union label on it.

Our Democratic Caucus is unified by our values, and one of our most sacred values is our commitment to America's working families. Since Day One, our Democratic House Majority has worked to deliver on our Better Deal: including by passing a $15 federal minimum wage, paycheck fairness for women, legislation to protect pensions and landmark bills lowering health care costs, increasing paychecks and rebuilding America's infrastructure.

We can all take particular pride in our success this year in passing the PRO Act: the cornerstone of our pro-worker agenda. This essential legislation strengthens collective bargaining, gives workers the power to override "right to work" laws, and stops employers from meddling in union elections.

As we mark this Labor Day during this difficult moment for America, let us recommit to building on our achievements, so that we can advance an economy that works for everyone by putting workers' interests, not the special interests, first.

Thank you for your leadership For The People.

Happy Labor Day.
