Congresswoman Angie Craig Hosts Senior Housing Roundtable

Statement

Date: Sept. 1, 2020

Today, Rep. Angie Craig hosted a roundtable with senior housing experts and advocates across Minnesota's Second Congressional District focused on the support needed for adequate, affordable senior housing.

In May, Rep. Craig voted for the HEROES Act which includes programs to help renters and homeowners during the COVID-19 pandemic, including funding for the Department of Housing and Urban Development for affordable senior housing. Today she reiterated her strong support for increasing the affordability and availability of senior housing.

"It was an honor to speak with and listen to the service providers and real estate professionals working to keep Minnesota's Second Congressional District's seniors stably housed. Even before COVID-19, older Americans, especially those on fixed incomes, have faced the rising cost of living and housing insecurity," says Rep. Craig. "It has been a priority of mine in Congress to fund the support systems our seniors rely on."

Today's discussion focused on:

The importance of stable, safe, affordable housing is the backbone of older American's health, especially during COVID-19.
The CARES Act funding that has been a vital part of maintaining the non-profits directly serving seniors by keeping them healthy, fed, and in their homes.
The Older Americans Act's core piece of the nutrition programs for CAP agencies like Three Rivers serving our rural seniors.
The caregivers who are looking for mental health support from our communities. It is vital that we support the workers and family members taking daily care of our seniors.
