Dan believes that health care should be available to every American. Yet too many Michiganders are worried about the cost of their insurance premiums or prescription drugs. Dan believes we must do more to ensure that every American has access to quality, affordable health insurance.

Dan believes that we must fix the parts of the Affordable Care Act that are not working for families, while restoring cuts to our health care system put forward by the Trump Administration that have raised costs for Michigan families. Dan has repeatedly opposed attempts by the Trump Administration to take away health insurance coverage for Americans with pre-existing conditions. He has also authored legislation to allow more people to buy into Medicare and supported bills that cut taxes to make it more affordable for small businesses to provide health coverage to their employees.

When it comes to the high price of prescription drugs, Dan has championed legislation in Congress, supported by Republicans and Democrats, to allow Medicare to negotiate with drug companies to lower the cost of drugs. This would help to lower out-of-pocket costs considerably for Michigan families, including seniors on Medicare and individuals with private insurance. Dan has also supported legislation to accelerate generic drugs coming to the market more quickly, which has significantly lowered costs for drugs.

On the Ways and Means Committee, Dan worked hard to end the practice of surprise medical billing. Some Michiganders have been charged unexpected and obscene charges for medical services because they were billed as out-of-network services, even though they had no ability to choose their emergency room or medical provider. If there is a payment dispute between insurance companies and health care providers, Dan believes that patients should not be in the middle of that dispute, or stuck paying the bill.
