Print Congressman Lipinski Votes 'Present' on Resolution Condemning ICE Due to Inclusion of Language Supporting Abortion

Statement

Date: Oct. 2, 2020

Today, Congressman Dan Lipinski (IL-03) released the following statement regarding this decision to vote present on the H.Res.1153:

"If whistleblower accounts are true that hysterectomies were performed on detained immigrant women without their consent, these acts were an atrocious abuse of human rights by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement that Congress must condemn and do everything possible to assure never happen again. The reason that I voted "present" on H.Res.1153 was that the resolution needlessly included language supporting abortion. There was no reason that this divisive language needed to be included. I could not vote in favor of legislation including that language, but I did not want to vote against the resolution condemning the alleged action. This was an issue I raised earlier this week but unfortunately the abortion language was not removed. This is emblematic of one of the biggest problems in Washington today: when facing a real issue that needs to be addressed to make our nation better, instead of looking to bring as much diverse support together as possible we find ways to further divide."
