Lofgren, Fudge Statement On Recent Attempts To Influence Election Officials

Committee on House Administration Chairperson Zoe Lofgren (D-Calif.) and Subcommittee on Elections Chairperson Marcia L. Fudge (D-Ohio) issued the following statement today after recent reports of federal elected officials attempting to exert influence over the post-election processing of ballots:

"There is a time and place for valid Congressional oversight of the elections process. Unfortunately, in recent days there have been repeated attempts by various elected officials to exert undue influence over the legally prescribed ballot counting and audit processes. Many of these same individuals have consistently levied unfounded, unsubstantiated claims about the integrity of the election.

"Election officials administered a nationwide general election during an unprecedented pandemic, and as the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency determined, the 2020 election was "the most secure in American history." Now we must allow state and local election officials to continue doing their job, ensuring every ballot is counted as cast. Attempts to strongarm local officials into discarding lawfully cast ballots are offensive to the very nature of our system of government. These actions only serve to undermine confidence in our elections, and they must end today."
