Congresswoman Lizzie Fletcher (TX-07) released the following statement at the conclusion of the Senate trial on the Article of Impeachment against former President Donald J. Trump:

"Since January 6, 2021, the United States Congress has been engaged in one of its most serious and somber responsibilities: determining whether to impeach and convict the President of the United States. It is a responsibility I take seriously, and did when I co-sponsored and voted in favor of the Article of Impeachment.

"The House impeachment managers presented a clear and compelling case to the Senate, laying out the overwhelming and undisputed evidence that that former President Trump incited an insurrection against the government of the United States resulting in an unprecedented attack on the symbolic and functional heart of our democracy, our Capitol. And, once he had, President Trump failed to defend the Capitol or the government as the attack took place. There is no greater violation of the Presidential oath to "preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution of the United States.'

"Today, 57 senators--Democrats, Independents and Republicans--voted to convict him for these acts that strike at the very heart of our constitutional democracy. Like the Senators, I was present in the Capitol that day, and I saw firsthand the very real threat to our country and our Constitution. This threat continues and is made worse by the Senate's failure to convict. I am deeply disappointed in those Senators who voted to acquit based on a dubious constitutional argument arising only from their own making--namely, that the Senate trial started too late.

"As a member of the House of Representatives, I could not have been more proud to be represented by the House impeachment managers who, in presenting this case, demonstrated their purpose and their patriotism."
