Womack Urges President Biden Against Re-Entering Disastrous Iran Nuclear Deal

Press Release

February 8, 2021....Congressman Steve Womack (AR-3) today joined Congressmen Lee Zeldin (NY-1), Doug Lamborn (CO-5), Joe Wilson (SC-2), and more than 100 other members in sending a letter urging President Biden against rejoining the disastrous Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the Iran Nuclear Deal. The representatives outline the flaws of the deal as written and highlight how entering back into the agreement without first securing any new restrictions, conditions, or other updates would hamper America's security interests and fail to hold Tehran accountable.

Congressman Womack said, "The Iran Nuclear Deal was a complete failure that prioritized Iran's interests over American security. It didn't stop Tehran from building its nuclear arsenal and funneled billions of dollars to a regime who isn't shy about its goal to destroy America or our ally Israel. The mullahs would like to see the U.S. re-enter the deal without new conditions--it would be a godsend for their tenuous grip on power. President Biden should build on the maximum pressure campaign of the last administration--not return to the Obama-era strategy of making concessions to a known state sponsor of terrorism."

The JCPOA was originally adopted during the Obama Administration in 2015. The poorly negotiated agreement emboldened the Iranian regime, which continued to pursue the use of ballistic missiles, support terrorists, and carry out horrific human rights violations. Though the Trump Administration rightfully withdrew the United States from the JCPOA in 2018, President Biden has indicated an interest in rejoining the flawed agreement.

Womack strongly advocated against the original nuclear deal. He has also consistently supported imposing sanctions on Iran and called for using all diplomatic, economic, and military tools to address their destabilizing behavior.
