Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, has been appointed to serve on the House Science, Space and Technology Committee--his third committee appointment in the 117th Congress. Serving on this committee, Kildee will expand his leadership in the House, strengthen his advocacy for investments in innovation and science to create economic opportunities for Michiganders, sustainable infrastructure and to protect communities from harmful chemicals such a per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).

The House Science, Space and Technology Committee works to expand America's long-term economic competitiveness through investments in science and technology. Jurisdiction of the committee involves oversight of most of the non-defense federal research and development programs, including in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and U.S. Department of Energy. It also includes exclusive jurisdiction over the National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA).

"I am grateful for the opportunity to serve on the Science, Space and Technology Committee, where I will be able to advance legislation investing in research and development to create good-paying jobs and ensure our communities have access to clean drinking water," Congressman Kildee said. "This pandemic has reinforced the importance of scientific research through the incredible development of a safe and effective coronavirus vaccine. Investments in research and technology will ensure America remains a global leader in science and innovation. I thank Speaker Pelosi and Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson for their confidence in me to serve on this important committee."

"Congressman Dan Kildee is a proven leader and tireless voice for the people of Michigan," said Speaker Nancy Pelosi. "His expertise, future-focused thinking and commitment to advancing the health and well-being of his community and all Americans will make him a valuable asset on the Space, Science and Technology Committee. As our nation faces grave health and economic challenges, Congressman Kildee and his fellow committee members are ready to advance policies that ensure we can Build Back Better, by strengthening our economy, creating good-paying jobs and ensuring American innovation continues to lead us into the future."

"I am thrilled to welcome Congressman Dan Kildee to the House Science, Space, and Technology Committee," said Chairwoman Eddie Bernice Johnson. "Congressman Kildee has for many years advocated for issues that are of great importance to the Science Committee. He brings a record of supporting the development of sustainable infrastructure, of bolstering American manufacturing, and promoting that science should once again play a key role in the creation of public policy. I look forward to working with him more closely this Congress to address the many challenges this nation faces."

Kildee also serves as Chief Deputy Whip, part of the Democratic leadership in the 117th Congress, a role that he also held in the previous Congress. The Chief Deputy Whip acts as a liaison among Members of Congress and the Democratic leadership team to build support for Democratic priorities. Congressman Kildee also serves on the prestigious Ways and Means Committee, the oldest and most powerful committee in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Budget Committee.
