Cortez Masto Releases Statement on Her Vote to Convict Donald J. Trump

Statement

Date: Feb. 13, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) today issued the following statement regarding her vote to convict Donald J. Trump of incitement of insurrection in the wake of the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

"It was clear from the facts and evidence presented during the trial that while serving as our President, Donald J. Trump intentionally disrupted the peaceful transfer of power in this country when he lied to his supporters by claiming the election was stolen, summoned them to Washington on January 6, 2021, and encouraged them to march to the Capitol to stop the certification of the vote for President-elect Biden.

"When his supporters attacked, as he called on them to do, he violated his responsibility as president and commander-in-chief to preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution and our Republic. It was obvious that Donald Trump was willing to use almost every measure at his disposal to gain and retain power, even if it meant overturning a free and fair election through violence. For that reason, I voted to convict Donald Trump of inciting an insurrection."
