Bourdeaux Voting Rights Amendment Passes House; Will Be Voted On As Part Of For The People Act

Today, the United States House of Representatives voted to include an amendment introduced by Congresswoman Carolyn Bourdeaux (GA-07), Congresswoman Nikema Williams (GA-05), and Congresswoman Lucy McBath (GA-06) as part of H.R. 1, the For The People Act.

The amendment includes key provisions to push back on recent efforts by the Georgia Legislature to suppress voting rights, including protecting vote-by-mail and ensuring access to secure drop boxes. Yesterday, Congresswoman Bourdeaux delivered testimony to the Rules Committee in support of her amendment, and earlier today addressed the House, asking for support.

"I am proud that my first amendment passed the House today and that it was on an issue as critical as voting rights," said Congresswoman Bourdeaux. "The effort to make voting more accessible is not a partisan issue -- in fact, it was Georgia Republicans who originally passed absentee voting, in 2005. We must ensure that every voice is heard and that every vote is counted, and I will keep pushing back against any effort to make it harder to vote. I thank Congresswoman Williams and Congresswoman McBath for joining me in this essential effort."

Congresswoman Bourdeaux's amendment to H.R. 1:

Codifies the ability of third parties to distribute applications for an absentee ballot;
Ensures that election officials who wish to provide unsolicited voter registration applications are not hindered in doing so by the state;
Requires that the number and location of ballot drop boxes provide a reasonable opportunity for voters to submit their completed ballot in a timely manner;
Protects the security of drop boxes through remote or electronic surveillance
