Location: Washington, DC

House Majority Whip James E. Clyburn today issued the following statement on House passage of the For the People Act and the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act:

"House Democrats are taking bold action to restore faith in American institutions. Blacks in America know all too well the pain of voter suppression and police brutality; our nation has been plagued by racial inequities since its founding. Today, House Democrats voted to repair these longstanding faults that strip power and justice from communities of color.

H.R. 1, the For the People Act, makes our elections more free and more fair. It ensures that every American's voice is heard and honored and that every vote will be counted. It prevents discrimination in congressional redistricting that dilutes minority voting power. And it restores integrity to elections by ending the influence of big, dark, special-interest money.

H.R. 1280, the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, takes a comprehensive approach to addressing the epidemic of police brutality and unequal justice. It makes structural changes to our law enforcement institutions to increase transparency and hold bad actors accountable. It reforms policing by banning chokeholds, no-knock warrants, and discriminatory profiling based on race and religion. It holds law enforcement officials accountable by eliminating qualified immunity, establishing a misconduct registry, and collecting data on transgressions. It authorizes grants to help reimagine policing and makes lynching a federal hate crime.

I urge the Senate to act swiftly to pass this legislation and join House Democrats in our commitment to ensure that America lives up to the promise of "liberty and justice for all.'"
