Governor Jeb Bush and First Lady Columba Bush today launched a month-long celebration as part of Black History Month, honoring the contributions African Americans throughout Florida's history. This year, the Black History Month theme focuses on the contributions made by African American athletes and their impact on Florida's history.

"Columba and I are proud to honor Florida's rich and diverse African American heritage. As we 'remember the past and celebrate the future', we pay tribute to the outstanding African American athletes who triumphed over adversity and reflect on the impact African-American pioneers, like the settlers of Fort Mose, have had on our great state," said Governor Bush. "Florida's commemoration of Black History Month is not only about educating our state's youth about the history of African Americans, but educating all Floridians on their many contributions and achievements."

As part of the month-long celebration, Governor Bush and the First Lady will announce the winners of the fifth annual Black History Month essay contest for K-12 students at the annual Black History Month reception. Students' essays focused on the theme, "What Impact Has an African American Athlete from Florida Had on My Life?" The theme for Florida's 2005 Black History Month celebration is, "Remembering the Past, Celebrating the Future."
