WASHINGTON, DC [03/03/2021] -- Today the House passed the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, legislation backed by Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici (D-OR) to transform police practices and end racial injustices by law enforcement.
"As we strive to reckon with our country's long history of systemic racism, too often we continue to witness horrific acts of police brutality and violence against Black people and others," said Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici. "Lives are at risk, and we cannot wait any longer to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.
"George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and many other people should still be alive and with their loved ones today. This comprehensive legislation will honor their memory and help prevent future tragedies by transforming policing and banning dangerous tactics like chokeholds and no-knock warrants. It also takes important steps, including overturning the qualified immunity doctrine and establishing a public National Police Misconduct Registry, that will hold law enforcement accountable for their wrongful actions. This change is overdue. I will continue to work in Congress to make sure all members of our community are safe from racial injustice and police brutality."
