Hagerty Applauds New U.S., UK, EU, and Canadian Sanctions against China for Human Rights Abuses in Xinjiang

WASHINGTON--United States Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN) today released the following statement after the United States imposed sanctions against two additional Chinese officials--Wang Junzheng, Secretary of the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps's Chinese Communist Party (CCP) Committee, and Chen Mingguo, Director of the Xinjiang Public Security Bureau--for their connection to China's serious human rights abuses against Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities in Xinjiang. The United Kingdom, European Union, and Canada today also imposed sanctions against various Chinese Government officials.

"Today's sanctions designations by the United States, United Kingdom, European Union, and Canada build on bipartisan efforts led by the Trump Administration and Congress in recent years to hold accountable China under the CCP for engaging in genocide and crimes against humanity with respect to Uyghurs and other Turkic Muslims in Xinjiang. The United States must continue efforts to lead the world in holding accountable the Chinese Communist Party for all of its predatory and threatening behavior."

After then-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo determined that CCP-ruled China is engaging in genocide and crimes against humanity in Xinjiang in January 2021, Secretary of State Antony Blinken subsequently upheld that determination.
