Perlmutter Applauds President Biden's Actions to Reduce Gun Violence f t # e

Statement

U.S. Rep. Ed Perlmutter (CO-07) today applauded President Biden and his administration for taking executive actions to reduce gun violence. The six Executive Orders include a rule to ensure devices such as a stabilizing brace which appears to have been used in the recent shooting in Boulder, Colorado would be subject to the requirements of the National Firearms Act.

"There have been too many gun violence tragedies in Colorado and across the country. Enough is enough. Everyone deserves to feel safe in their community," said Perlmutter. "I'm glad to see President Biden take these initial steps to make gun violence less easy, less frequent and less deadly. We all must do everything we can to prevent future gun violence tragedies."

Late last year, the ATF began rulemaking with the intent to classify stabilizing arm braces as short-barrel rifles under the National Firearms Act but pulled back after opposition from the gun lobby.

Following the Boulder shooting, Perlmutter led a letter urging President Biden to use its existing authority to regulate concealable assault-style weapons, such as the Ruger AR-556 with a stabilizing arm brace that appears to have been used in the shooting. The Ruger AR-556 is an assault-style weapon currently classified as a pistol despite shooting the same ammunition as an AR-15. Using an arm brace with the pistol can make a firearm more stable and accurate while still being concealable. Prior to the Boulder shooting, Perlmutter had sent a letter urging the Biden administration to take immediate action to regulate the sale of ghost guns which provides domestic terrorists, gun traffickers, and other prohibited individuals with unrestricted access to deadly firearms. Last fall, Perlmutter also wrote to President-elect Biden to express his support for David Chipman to serve as the next Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).

In recent years, Perlmutter has led the charge to ensure additions and accessories that are added to firearms to make them function as high-capacity machine guns and improve a weapon's accuracy are fully regulated under the National Firearms Act. Perlmutter has long-supported other gun violence preventions measures such as reinstating the Assault Weapons Ban, establishing universal background checks, strengthening the NICS database, researching the causes of gun violence, and expanding federal prohibitors related to mental health, substance abuse and history of violence.

Perlmutter is the Vice Chair of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, which was established after the tragedy at Sandy Hook and has grown to a membership of more than 185. Perlmutter represented Aurora, Colorado during the tragic Aurora theater shooting in 2012.
