Location: Flint, MI

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, today announced $20,539,384 in federal grants to fund Head Start educational opportunities in Genesee and Saginaw Counties.

These federal grants, awarded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), include $10,421,276 for Genesee County and $10,118,108 for Saginaw Intermediate School District. Funding is available as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021, which Congressman Kildee helped pass.

Head Start is an early childhood education program that promotes children's development through services that support education, health and family well-being. Programming is administered by local public, private non-profit and for-profit agencies. The program includes child learning services in reading, math and science; nutritious meals; health and developmental screenings; oral and mental health support; behavioral and special needs services and family services.

"Early education programs like Head Start are some of the most important investments we can make to give our children greater opportunity to succeed," said Congressman Kildee. "We know that when a student receives a high-quality early education, they are set up for success in their continued learning and development. I am proud to announce this federal grant to support local Head Start programs in Genesee and Saginaw Counties."

Since coming to Congress, Congressman Dan Kildee has been an advocate for early childhood education. In the wake of the Flint water crisis, Kildee successfully advocated for federal grants to expand Head Start and Early Head Start services for Flint children. In June 2020, Kildee announced over $20 million in federal grants to fund Head Start programs in mid-Michigan. Recently, Kildee announced a $12 million federal grant for Head Start and Early Head Start programs in Genesee County.
