Joint Statements by Reps. Kildee and Stevens on Ambassador Tai's Visit to Mexico

Statement

Date: July 6, 2021
Location: Flint, MI
Issues: Foreign Affairs

Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus and member of the Ways and Means Committee, and Congresswoman Haley Stevens (MI-11) issued the following statement as U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai is set to meet with her Canadian and Mexican counterparts regarding the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement:

"As we continue to implement the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement, it is important for all countries to strictly enforce the terms of the agreement. Since USMCA's passage, we have continued concerns of labor rights violations in Mexico, including a recent tampered union vote in Silao.

"All workers deserve fair trade deals. We must not repeat the mistakes of past bad trade deals that weakened rules of origin provisions, especially that for automobiles, that are essential to Michigan workers. Strong enforcement of the U.S.-Mexico-Canada agreement will support workers, elevate standards and create a stronger economy in the United States, Canada and Mexico."
