Rep. Roybal-Allard: Study Shows Build Back Better Act Could Save CA Families Thousands in Child Care Costs Each Year

Today, U.S. Representative Lucille Roybal-Allard (CA-40) highlighted new analysis from the House Committee on Education and Labor that found the Build Back Better Act could save California families thousands of dollars in child care costs each year. The legislation's child care investments, which the House Education and Labor Committee advanced in September, would give families greater financial security, allow more parents to rejoin to workforce, and help grow the nation's economy.

The Committee's report found that the typical family of four in California with one infant in full-time center-based child care would save $15,510 each year and the typical family of four with one infant and one child in full-time center-based child care would save $27,680 each year.

"The Build Back Better Act provides the historic investments that parents need to return to work and provide their children with high-quality care," said Rep. Roybal-Allard. "Parents in California's 40th Congressional District and across our nation are doing all they can to provide for their children and stay financially stable throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to helping provide working families with financial security and boosting our economy by allowing parents to return to work, the Build Back Better Act will also increase the quality of available child care and raise wages for child care workers who are often overlooked. We need to pass the Build Back Better Act so families in all our communities can thrive in a stronger and more inclusive economy."

Under the Build Back Better Act, no family would pay more than 7 percent of their income on child care. Families making 100 percent of the State Median Income or less would pay no more than 2 percent of their income on child care, regardless of the number of children being cared for.
