Guthrie, Matsui Introduce Bill to Continue Newborn Hearing Screening Program

Press Release

Date: Oct. 13, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02), along with Congresswoman Doris Matsui (CA-06), yesterday introduced the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Act of 2021.

This bipartisan bill would reauthorize the newborn hearing screening and intervention program. Since this program was started in 1999, this program has been successful in significantly increasing the number of infants screened for hearing loss.

"I introduced the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Act to ensure the newborn hearing screening and intervention program can continue. This program provides early diagnosis, intervention, and treatment for children with hearing loss. It is essential that infants are screened early for hearing loss, so families can get the treatments and services needed. We have seen a substantial increase in the number of children receiving an early screening for hearing loss thanks to this program. I'm proud to help lead this bill in the House again to reauthorize this bipartisan and successful program," said Congressman Guthrie.

"The first few years of a child's life are critical for developing speech and language skills, which makes early screening for hearing loss an important step towards meeting their full potential," said Congresswoman Matsui. "This bill gives families access to hearing screenings and ensures that those diagnosed can access appropriate follow up care and timely intervention services. I am proud to once again lead this legislation that creates a lasting positive impact on our children's essential development."

Guthrie and Matsui championed the reauthorization of this program in the House in 2017.
