Rep. Steel: "We have a crisis happening at our ports"

Press Release

Date: Oct. 20, 2021
Location: Washington, DC

Today Rep. Michelle Steel (CA-48) joined members of the House Republican Leadership Team to discuss the port backlog, the oil spill off the Orange County coast, and the supply chain crisis affecting the entire country. Just yesterday, there were 100 ships waiting to enter the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, setting a new record.

"We have a crisis happening at our ports…we need to solve these bigger supply chain issues, not double down on failing economic policies that make life for American businesses and workers harder and more expensive," said Rep. Steel.

Rep. Steel has been leading efforts to address the port backlog and recently introduced the SHIP Act to get these ships moving and out of Orange County's coastal waters. The most recent reporting indicates the oil spill in Orange County was caused by an anchor from one of these idling ships.
