WASHINGTON--Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-05), Chief Deputy Whip of the House Democratic Caucus, issued the following statement regarding the attempted military coup in Sudan:
"I strongly condemn the forced removal of Sudan's transitional government by the country's military forces, including Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan. The Sudanese military must understand that its actions are completely unacceptable and will have major consequences when it comes to Sudan's relations with the United States and other countries around the world.

"The Sudanese people have bravely stood up to demand the right to democratically choose their own future after decades of oppression under a previous oppressive regime. Before today's coup attempt by military leaders, Sudan's civilian-led government was positively reengaging with the United States and the world.

"The Sudanese military must immediately release Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and other civilian members of the transitional government, as well restore internet access and respect the rights of the Sudanese people who have taken to the streets to peacefully protest. The world is watching the Sudanese military's actions closely. I support the United States and our allies using every diplomatic tool available to restore stability and civilian-led control of Sudan's government."
