Hagedorn on Statement on Democrats' Tax-and-Spending Spree

Statement

WASHINGTON -- Congressman Jim Hagedorn (MN-01) released the following statement after voting against a rule to initiate debate on H.R. 5376, the Democrats' multi-trillion dollar big government socialist reconciliation package, as well as passage of H.R. 3684, the Senate Infrastructure bill.

"President Biden and House Democrats are working to push the most radical and extreme agenda in American history. Their schemes are littered with reckless leftwing planks to raise taxes, increase deficit spending, impose the Green New Deal, grant amnesty to illegals, expand welfare programs without work requirements, and woke so called "equity" programs that use race and identity to discriminate.

"Their goal is to fundamentally change and reorder the fabric of our great country. These votes are a slap in the face to the the vast majority of Americans who are worried about the $30 trillion debt bomb, high-wage jobs, inflation, and the tyrannical power of big government socialism.

"As it stands, the Democrats have set the terms for debate on their radical tax-and-spending spree without a CBO score and little time to actually consider what's being proposed.

"Similar to Speaker Pelosi's disastrous Obamacare statement that Congress needed to pass the bill to know is what is in the bill, for this monstrosity the Speaker is effectively directing Democrat House members to vote for the bill to find out the bill's true and total cost. Members of the House should not be forced to vote on controversial transformational legislation without the opportunity to read and review details and understanding the cost.

"The American people see through this charade, and such games will not make their agenda any more popular or successful. In fact, this kind of deception ultimately hurts our government and undermines faith in our system.

"What is at our gates now is a Trojan Horse for the Democrats to force their socialist agenda on the American people. We must vehemently reject these harmful ideas and policies and return to commonsense and the time-tested principles: limited government, free enterprise capitalism, and fiscal responsibility. Only with a return to such principles and fighting for conservative values can we restore America's greatness."

Jim Hagedorn was reelected in 2020 to serve Minnesota's First District in the U.S. House of Representatives for a second term. He grew up on his family's grain and livestock farm near Truman. Jim's father, former Congressman Tom Hagedorn (MN-02), grandfather, and great-grandfather were all southern Minnesota farmers, and Jim resides in the rural community of Blue Earth. During his time in Congress, Hagedorn has consistently fought for the conservative principles that have made America the greatest nation in the history of the world and championed legislation to promote the First District's primary industries and job creators -- farming, small business and medical care. Hagedorn is a member of the House Committees on Agriculture and Small Business.
