Statement

Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Infrastructure

Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-13), senior member of the House Appropriations Committee and Chair Emeritus of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, released the following statement applauding the passage of H.R. 5376, the Build Back Better Act:

"After months of tough negotiations, and just a few weeks after an historic investment in repairing our crumbling infrastructure, we have delivered President Biden's economic agenda--the Build Back Better Act. This transformational legislation lowers household costs for working and low-income families and enacts tax cuts for the middle class.

"Affordable housing, climate action, and access to good paying union jobs are central to this legislation, and are crucial priorities in my district and throughout the country. My focus has always been to invest in caregivers, seniors, communities of color and children. This legislation lowers health care and childcare costs, fights inflation by making corporations pay their fair share, and makes the largest investment in addressing the climate crisis in history--and it is paid for.

"As a participant in negotiations with the Progressive Caucus, the White House, and Congressional leadership, I know how hard everyone has worked to get this done. I commend the leadership of President Biden, Speaker Pelosi, the Progressive Caucus, and the Congressional Black Caucus for their steadfast commitment to building back better and bolder for the people.

"This bill is just the first step. We will continue to address the many challenges faced by millions across America. I urge my Senate colleagues to act swiftly to pass this legislation--which will create good paying union jobs, address racial and economic inequality, and reduce poverty. I look forward to sending this legislation to President Biden for his signature."
