U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO) released the following statement today on the anniversary of the January 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol building:

"January 6th was one of the darkest days in our nation's history. And for those of us who were in the Capitol that day, it's a day we will never forget.

"I never thought I'd see a sitting U.S. president incite a deadly attack on our own Democracy, but that's exactly what President Trump did one year ago today. Despite Trump and his supporters' deadly attempt to thwart our democratic process, our Democracy held. And, as a nation, it is now our collective responsibility to do everything we can to prevent such an assault from ever happening again.

"I remain deeply honored that Speaker Pelosi asked me to serve as one of the nine House impeachment managers to present the case in the Senate against President Trump for his actions leading up to that horrific event. I believe we achieved our primary goal, which was to show the American people the depth of the insurrection, and to set us on a path to ensuring it never happens again.

"Our Democracy has been tested in ways that it's never been before. As Americans, it's now up to each and every one of us to do our part to protect it, and to strengthen it, and to ensure that no rogue president can ever threaten the foundation of our country -- free and fair elections -- again."
