Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), Co-Chairman of the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, better known as the Helsinki Commission, today spoke virtually at the extraordinary session of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's Parliamentary Assembly and pledged united American support for Ukrainian President Velodymyr Zenensky and the Ukrainian people.

In his remarks, Co-Chairman Cohen said in part:

"It's heartbreaking to watch what's going on in Ukraine and it's totally an affront to the Helsinki Final Accords and what we stand for. To have a member of our organization, the Russian Federation, totally tear it asunder -- the Final Agreement, the rule of law, respect for nations' borders and states, and national integrity -- is an anathema.

"We had in the United States a phone call, a Zoom call, from President Zelensky. He is a hero around the world and a great leader for Ukraine. He asked us several things…and we responded.

"The United States Congress, and the President, have stopped importing oil and gas and energy products from Russia. We want to do everything we can, and I support the president as far as he goes. As far as he goes, I will go with him, and I'll try to take him further…

"Putin is a sociopath. He doesn't care about the harm he's causing the people of Ukraine and the people of the world. He has become the Hitler…of the 21st century for his effective 21st century Stalingrad…I agree with President Zelensky that this is a genocide. He didn't think Ukraine should exist, he doesn't think it should exist; he thinks that they should be destroyed. He wants to have as many people leave as possible and kill the others through starvation, bombs or bullets.

"The United States Congress just passed a $13 billion package for humanitarian aid and weapons to help the Ukrainian people. We are united, Democrats and Republicans, sans maybe a handful, in support of Ukraine. We will support Ukraine…Glory to Ukraine."
