Amtrak CEO Meets with Rep. Cuellar to Discuss Possible Passenger Rail from San Antonio to Monterrey

Press Release

Date: March 17, 2022
Location: Laredo, Texas
Issues: Transportation

Over the weekend, U.S. Congressman Henry Cuellar (TX-28) met with Amtrak President and CEO, Stephen Gardener, and Amtrak Executive Vice President and CFO, Tracie Winbigler, to discuss the construction a passenger rail that would run from San Antonio to Laredo. The rail would connect at the U.S.-Mexico border and extend to Monterrey, Nuevo Leon. Emmanuel Loo, Director of International Relations for the government of Nuevo Leon, also attended the meeting.

Congressman Cuellar released the below statement following the meeting:

"A passenger rail from San Antonio to Laredo would provide a tremendous boost to our local economies," said Congressman Henry Cuellar. "The meeting with Amtrak was very promising. Amtrak is trying to have a bigger presence in Texas, and one of the proposed projects is a passenger rail from San Antonio to Monterrey. The proposed rail is still in the early stages of discussion so we will keep working in coordination with Amtrak, the state of Texas, and the government of Nuevo Leon to plan this project. However, the discussions come at a perfect time, as we included billions of dollars in federal funding for projects such as this in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. I want to thank CEO, Stephen Gardener, and CFO, Tracie Winbigler, for meeting with me to discuss this project that will revolutionize growth and bring countless other benefits and jobs to south Texas."
