Statement by Congressman Kildee on Bill to Ban Russian Oil Imports

Statement

Date: March 10, 2022
Location: Washington, DC

"Banning imports of Russian oil will inflict great economic pain on Vladimir Putin for his unprovoked war in Ukraine. Today's action has strong bipartisan support in Congress, from Republicans and Democrats. This bill also reviews Russia's access to the global economy through the World Trade Organization and strengthens our ability to impose further economic sanctions on Russia under the Magnitsky Act. Additionally, I have introduced bipartisan legislation to seize and repurpose assets from Russian oligarchs to aid the people of Ukraine.

"I know that Michiganders are seeing higher prices at the pump because of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. In Congress, I will continue to do everything I can to minimize the impact of Putin's price hike on Michigan families. I have proposed suspending the federal gas tax for the rest of the year as one way we can immediately put more money back in the pockets of working families. In these unprecedented times, Congress should vote on my bill to lower gas prices and cut taxes for Michiganders right away."
