U.S. Rep. John Katko (NY-24) today announced $786,432 in federal funding has been awarded to SUNY Upstate Medical University to support research on schizophrenia.

This funding is available through the National Institute of Mental Health, a division of the National Institute of Health (NIH). It will be used to fund a study conducted by SUNY Upstate's Laboratory of Behavioral and Psychiatric Genetics on the genetic factors that contribute to schizophrenia. Results from this study could help medical professionals better identify and treat schizophrenia. Since coming to Congress, Rep. Katko, who serves as Co-Chair of the bipartisan Mental Health Caucus, has successfully advocated for additional funding for the NIH, and, most recently, successfully advocated for the inclusion of $45 billion for NIH in the recently passed funding package for Fiscal Year 2022.

"Today, I'm pleased to announce SUNY Upstate Medical University has received $786,432 in federal funds from the National Institute of Health (NIH)," said Rep. Katko. "With this funding, researchers at SUNY Upstate will conduct an important study that could help medical professionals better treat individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia. In Congress, I've been a strong advocate for funding to advance mental health treatment, and I'm proud this funding will help provide researchers with the necessary resources to develop a fuller understanding of these disorders."
