Eshoo Statement on Hangar One Restoration Beginning This Week

Today Congresswoman Anna G. Eshoo (CA-18) released the following statement after NASA announced that under the Planetary Ventures (PV) Moffett Federal Airfield Lease Agreement, PV will begin restoration efforts on Hangar One this spring on May 5, 2022.

"Having worked on this issue since 2003, I'm thrilled that restoration of Hangar One will finally begin on May 5. Our community has worked for years to save this historic landmark that defines the landscape of the South Bay region and Silicon Valley," said Eshoo. "The Hanger was originally built during the Great Depression and provided hundreds of much-needed jobs. It has been adjacent to NASA Ames from the start and was the training grounds and aircraft hangar during World War II. This American icon is also one of the largest freestanding structures in the country, covering 8 acres at the Moffett Field airship hangar site in Mountain View. I'm so proud that we were able to preserve this iconic piece of history for generations to come."

According to NASA, PV plans to replicate the original visual characteristics of Hangar One as closely as possible. The initial phase will include structural upgrades and recoating which is expected to take two years. Under the lease agreement, PV will identify and mitigate environmental impacts accordingly. NASA Ames will also be monitoring the construction for compliance with the plans and permits. Community members can expect to see scaffolding going up soon.
