Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the statement today after President Joe Biden announced he would increase the base salary pay of federal wildland firefighters by $20,000 per year or 50% of their current base salary:

"The actions taken today by President Biden prove just how essential it is to ensure our firefighters earn the pay and dignity they deserve. Thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, firefighters will soon see a bi-weekly increase in their paychecks of up to 50% of their annual base salary for two years. I applaud this great news for our firefighters, who are on the frontlines when we are in need and who bravely serve our communities. As a proud champion for increased pay for our federal employees, and I am pleased that this issue remains a priority for this Administration. I am also glad to see the Biden Administration announce measures to strengthen mental health resources for firefighters in need. I will continue to fight for our federal employees alongside the Biden Administration so that we can build on today's progress, and secure additional wins for our hardworking public servants."
