Dear Colleague: Miscarriage of Justice

Dear Democratic Colleague,

Yesterday, when the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, it was guilty of a miscarriage of justice. It turned back the clock fifty years on freedom in America.

I write this morning to share with you just one heartbreaking story, this one reported by the Associated Press.

Andrea Prudente was sixteen weeks pregnant when she and her loving partner traveled from their home in Washington State to Malta to celebrate the blessing of her pregnancy. Tragically, the trip quickly became, in her words, "a nightmare" when she began to miscarry. She was told by doctors that not only would her fetus not survive, but her life was in grave danger, too. The only solution would be to end her pregnancy: a sad step for a couple so excited to welcome a child into their family.

However, Malta is the only nation in Europe that has a complete ban on abortion, with no exceptions whatsoever. According to Maltese law, women who seek abortions and doctors who perform them could even be arrested. In order to save her life, Andrea had to be airlifted to Spain just to get the reproductive care she direly needed. Thankfully, she was able to get the procedure and is in stable condition.

Make no mistake: a future where reproductive care is criminalized -- even when a woman's life is at stake -- and where stories like Andrea's happen every day has long been the dark, dangerous dream of the Republican Party. And because of Donald Trump, Mitch McConnell, Congressional Republicans and their radical supermajority on the Supreme Court, the nightmare this American couple faced abroad has now become the reality for millions of American families.

For all of these politicians -- including the justices of the Supreme Court, who are so absolutist about a woman's reproductive health -- what would they do if this story happened to their loved one?

We must and we will keep up the fight for health, safety and freedom -- for women, for their families and for every American.

Thank you for your leadership For The People.
