Hinson Statement on Gun Legislation

Statement

Date: June 24, 2022
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Guns

Congresswoman Ashley Hinson (IA-01) released the following statement on the Senate gun package considered by the U.S. House of Representatives today.

"I join Iowans and Americans who are heartbroken and outraged by the tragedy in Uvalde and other senseless acts of violence across the country.

"There are many parts of this package I support, including increased mental health funding, training for law enforcement, and bolstering school security. However, I have concerns that parts of this legislation violate due process rights, and I could not support the bill in full.

"Legislative solutions must keep guns from getting into the wrong hands without violating the rights of law-abiding citizens, and unfortunately, this legislation did not meet that standard.

"I will continue working directly with local law enforcement and my colleagues in Congress on solutions that keep guns out of the wrong hands, improve school and public safety, and bolster mental health resources." -- Congresswoman Ashley Hinson

Background:

-Congresswoman Hinson is an original co-sponsor of STOP II (Secure Every School and Protect our Nation's Children) Act to fund school resource officers and mental health counselors, bolster school security, and establish a way for the federal government, schools, and law enforcement to better communicate and provide trainings.
