Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congresswoman Suzan DelBene (WA-01) released the following statement after the U.S. Department of the Treasury established the Office of Tribal and Native Affairs:

"The Treasury Department has a significant impact on the welfare and sovereignty of Tribal nations. By establishing the Office of Tribal and Native Affairs, the Biden administration is taking a critical step to fulfill the federal trust responsibility and help ensure that the Treasury nurtures a strong relationship with Tribal nations and communities. This office will help facilitate consultation and communication between Tribal governments and the Treasury and advance equity in our tax system."

Last November, DelBene called on Secretary Yellen to create the Office of Tribal and Native Affairs.

This new office will coordinate Tribal relations within the Treasury Department and will be led by U.S. Treasurer Marilynn Malerba, the first Native woman in the position.
