Newhouse Calls Out Biden Administration's Hypocritical Border Policy

Press Release

Date: June 30, 2022
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) introduced an amendment to the FY 2023 Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies Appropriations Bill to require all COVID-19-related national states of emergency to be lifted before Title 42 is officially terminated, ensuring the Biden Administration coordinates and communicates with border communities and puts a comprehensive, workable plan in place before lifting Title 42.

While the amendment was adopted by voice vote, Chairwoman DeLauro and other House Democrats spoke in strong opposition to the amendment, arguing that Title 42 and the public health emergency declaration are unrelated--even though Title 42 was put in place specifically because of the pandemic.

"The Biden Administration has declared the pandemic over at the border, yet many federal restrictions remain in place for healthcare workers, our military, legal travelers, and even critical H-2A visa holders, which has created challenges for our farmers who are already hurting for labor," said Rep. Newhouse. "The administration can't have it both ways. If they think it's safe to lift Title 42 at the border, then it should be safe to lift the COVID state of emergency for the whole country. My amendment ensures just that."
