Location: Washington, DC

Today Congresswoman Kim Schrier, M.D. (WA-08) voted in support of the Lower Food and Fuel Costs Act. This legislation will shore up the food and agriculture supply chains, assist farmers, and help to bring down costs for American families.

"The goal here is to make life a little easier for the people we represent. To help you fill up your tank and feed your family. To help farmers spend less on inputs without lowering crop yields," said Rep. Schrier. "As the only member on the House Agriculture Committee from the Northwest, I will continue to do all I can to support farmers and lower costs for families."

The Lower Food and Fuel Costs Act contains multiple bills that recently passed the House Agriculture Committee with strong bipartisan or unanimous support. This legislation helps families and farmers by:

* Empowering the U.S. Department of Agriculture to work with farmers and producers to build up local supply chains to create more resilient food systems
* Giving farmers more assistance on how to use precision agriculture and nutrient management to cut down on the need for increasingly expensive fertilizer
* Increasing competition in the meat and poultry sectors by providing resources to smaller producers so they can operate without relying on the larger companies. This will allow for more price stability for consumers
* Supporting increased domestic production of biofuels which are cheaper per gallon at the gas pump

This legislation now goes to the Senate.
