Rep. Grijalva Statement on Executive Order to Help Safeguard Abortion Access and Rights

Today, Rep. Raúl M. Grijalva issued the following statement in response to President Biden's executive order to help safeguard abortion access and rights.

"Today, President Biden took action to safeguard reproductive health services, including abortion care for millions of women who were left in limbo following the undoing of Roe v. Wade," said Rep. Grijalva. "And while the damage of the far-right Supreme Court majority's decision will reverberate for generations to come, Democrats in the House and President Biden are taking proactive efforts to protect abortion rights. Now, it is beyond time for the Senate to follow suit, do away with archaic filibuster rules, and finally pass abortion protection laws that have been languishing in their chamber at the expense of millions of women, especially women of color, low-income women, and rural women who are disproportionately impacted by this ruling. Democrats were elected to deliver, and we must not fail American women.

I am unwavering in my support of women, not politicians, making their own health care choices. At a time when states continue their assault on women and healthcare providers, President Biden's actions will save lives. I call on the administration to continue to build upon this executive order to ensure safe pathways for women to seek the medical care they choose. It is also more clear than ever that Congress must pass government funding bills without adding the harmful Hyde amendment rider. I support this executive order and once again call on my Senate colleagues to stand with the majority of Americans in protecting abortion rights."

President Biden's Executive Order defends reproductive rights by:

* Safeguarding access to reproductive health care services, including abortion and contraception;
* Protecting the privacy of patients and their access to accurate information;
* Promoting the safety and security of patients, providers, and clinics; and
* Coordinating the implementation of Federal efforts to protect reproductive rights and access to health care.
