Rep. Frankel Statement on Voting to Protect Abortion Care

Press Release

Date: July 15, 2022
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Abortion

Today, Congresswoman Lois Frankel (FL-21) released the following statement after the House passed the Women's Health Protection Act (WHPA) and the Ensuring Women's Right to Reproductive Freedom Act--two bills aimed at protecting access to abortion care in America.

"As Republicans push toward their dark and extreme goal of a nationwide abortion ban, Democrats are working quickly to stop them in their tracks and ensure that women, not politicians, have the freedom to make important, personal decisions," said Rep. Frankel. "These Democratic bills would prohibit states from banning abortion, enacting unnecessary restrictions, or creating obstacles to access abortion services, and protect doctors who provide abortion services as well as the women and their loved ones who travel across state lines to get the care they need. I am proud that the House has passed both of these critical bills to protect reproductive freedom in America."

WHPA, which Frankel co-leads, would protect access to abortion care regardless of zip code, ensuring that Americans can exercise freedom over their reproductive health. WHPA previously passed the House in September 2021 but failed in the Senate. The Ensuring Women's Right to Reproductive Freedom Act would prevent Republicans from criminalizing, fining, or suing women who exercise their constitutional right to travel across state lines to obtain a legal abortion.

Both bills passed the House now head to the Senate for their approval.
