Letter to Joseph R. Biden, President of the United States - MEMBERS OF CONNECTICUT DELEGATION CALL ON PRESIDENT BIDEN TO USE DEFENSE PRODUCTION ACT TO LOWER GAS PRICES

Letter

Date: July 19, 2022
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Oil and Gas

Dear Mr. President,

We write today to urge you to utilize the full powers of the Defense Production Act to lower gas prices as soon as possible. We were heartened to hear your office declare your willingness to do so last Wednesday and we encourage you to make haste, Americans are feeling nothing but pain at the pump and businesses that rely on transportation are hurting.

Being from New England, our constituents are bracing for what will be a dramatically increase to the cost of home heating oil on top of gas prices which are up almost 40% from 2021. High gas prices, the related inflation and fear of not being able to stay warm this winter are the main things stopping American families from enjoying the remarkable economic recovery that you have led since taking office.

We applaud your administration's actions taking an all of the above approach to energy production and doing all you can as people face this critical time. In the meantime, the unprecedented situation we find ourselves in requires immediate action to aide Americans in need. Despite global issues impacting our national interests, major refining companies have chosen to keep production near their pandemic lows, resulting in sky rocketing profits for less work for the companies. We appreciate your request that oil refiners "take immediate action" to boost capacity to pre-pandemic levels. Enacting the Defense Production Act to speed increased action from these companies will right size production and stabilize the budgets of American businesses and households.
