Cotton Amendment Targets Fentanyl Variants

Press Release

Date: Aug. 6, 2022
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Drugs

Senator Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) introduced an amendment to the upcoming budget reconciliation spending bill that would eliminate the expiration date on the Drug Enforcement Agency's (DEA) emergency scheduling of fentanyl analogues to allow for permanent control of these deadly substances.

Amendment text may be found here.

"The DEA's emergency scheduling of all new fentanyl variants helps stop the flow of the fentanyl analogues drug cartels are using to skirt our laws. But to stop the drug crisis from getting worse and provide law enforcement the real tools they need to get these drugs off our streets, we must make their fentanyl scheduling permanent," said Cotton.

Background:

Senator Cotton has previously introduced bills to permanently schedule fentanyl in 2021 and 2022, but Democrats have blocked their passage.
