HOLT RESPONDS TO STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS

Rep. Rush Holt (NJ-12) released the following statement tonight in response to President Bush's State of the Union address:

"It will take more than one year to restore the damage inflicted by President Bush's misguided policies and priorities. Unfortunately, tonight's speech was largely a recitation of those failed policies, including staying the course in Iraq, making permanent his tax cuts, and inadequately addressing our nation's reliance on fossil fuels.

In order to make the State of our Union stronger, Congress should continue to assert its oversight responsibilities, especially as it helps make Americans safer at home and abroad. We should advance a strategy to strengthen economic development and create new jobs. We should invest in math, science, and foreign education and help make college more affordable. We should take further significant steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. We should seriously address the state of health care in American and set us on a path toward universal coverage."
